What it is used for: Fever & Cough.
Indications as listed by the manufacturer: Carbocisteine is a mucolytic agent for the adjunctive therapy of respiratory tract disorders characterised by excessive, viscous mucus, including chronic obstructive airways disease.
How it works: Carbocisteine works by making phlegm (mucus) less sticky. This makes it easier for you to cough up.
Active ingredient: Carbocisteine.
Reported side effects: Bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract (blood in vomit or black stools), Skin rash or blistering of the skin, swelling of the face or lips.
Known drug interactions: Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you (or your child) are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Adults : 15 ml 3 times a day reducing to 10 ml 3 times a day or 3 cap twice daily , reducing to 15ml or 2 cap twice daily once a satisfactory response has been obtained. Children : Under 2 yr : Not recommended. 2-5 yr : 2.5-5ml four times daily ; 5-12yr : 10ml three times daily. OR As directed by your physician .
Active ingredient: Carbocisteine. Labelled strength: 250mg/5ml.
- It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
- You (or your child) must not use medicines which suppress cough (cough suppressants) or which dry out bronchial secretions when taking this children syrup. This is because this Children syrup thins secretions, making them easier to cough up. Coughing is a useful mechanism for expectoration.
- Treatment should be stopped if bleeding in the stomach or intestine occurs .
- Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you (or your child) have a fever or are coughing up greenish mucus .
- Caution is advised in the administration of carbocisteine in individuals susceptible to gastroduodenal ulcers, as mucolytics have the capacity to destroy the gastric mucosal barrier.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
