Cough, Cold & Flu

Ease the symptoms, rest properly, and know when it is more than a cold.

Most coughs and colds are viral, which means antibiotics do nothing for them. What helps is symptom relief: paracetamol for fever and aches, steam and warm fluids for a blocked nose, and a linctus or expectorant if the cough is keeping you awake. Expect seven to ten days.

Pick single-ingredient products where you can. Combination sachets often duplicate paracetamol, and it is easy to take too much across two different products in one day. If you are unsure what you have already taken, ask our pharmacist before adding another.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for fever above 39°C lasting more than three days, breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up blood, or a cough that outlasts three weeks. Children under two, older adults and anyone with asthma should be assessed sooner.
