Digestive Health
Reflux, bloating and irregularity — settle it and spot the red flags.
Occasional heartburn after a heavy or spicy meal is common and responds well to an antacid or alginate taken after eating. Eating earlier in the evening, smaller portions, and raising the head of the bed do more for night-time reflux than any medicine.
For irregularity, fibre and fluid come before laxatives. If you do need a laxative, an osmotic one is gentler on the bowel long-term than a stimulant.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, a change in bowel habit lasting more than three weeks.
