What it is used for: Bacterial Infection.
Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is used to treat : Acute sinusitis , Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis , Community-acquired pneomonia (of mild to moderate severity) , Uncomplicated urinary tract infections , Acute pyelonephritis
How it works: Gemifloxacin inhibits two specific enzymes, DNA gyrase and DNA topoisomerase IV, which aid in bacterial DNA replication. Gemifloxacin displays strong binding affinity at both of these target sites, whichhelps maintain high potency against resistant S pneumoniae. This dual targeting with Gemifloxacin is achievable at therapeutic drug levels.
Active ingredient: Gemifloxacin.
Reported side effects: Diarrhoea ; nausea ; headache ; abdominal pain , vomiting ;dizziness ; and taste perversion abdominal pain, anorexia, arthralgia, constipation, dermatitis, dizziness, dry mouth, dyspepsia, fatigue, flatulence, fungal infection, gastritis, genitalmoniliasis, hyperglycemia, insomnia, leukopenia, moniliasis, pruritus, somnolence, taste perversion, , urticaria, vaginitis, and vomiting.
Known drug interactions: Theophylline, digoxin or an ethinylestradiol/levonorgestrol , calcium carbonate, cimetidine, omeprazole, or an estrogen/progesterone , Magnesium and/or aluminum-containing antacids,products containing ferrous sulfate, multivitamin preparations containing zinc or other metal cations, or didanosine , Sucralfate .
Adults : 320mg once daily. The following are the duration of treatment. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis : For 5 days. Community -acquired pneumonia (mild to moderate severity ) : For 7 days. Children : Not recommended. Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustments.
