What it is used for: Epilepsy.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients 1 month of age and older .

How it works: Brivaracetam displays a high and selective affinity for synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A), a transmembrane glycoprotein found at presynaptic level in neurons and in endocrine cells. Although the exact role of this protein remains to be elucidated it has been shown to modulate exocytosis of neurotransmitters. Binding to SV2A is believed to be the primary mechanism for brivaracetam anticonvulsant activity.

Active ingredient: Brivaracetam.

Reported side effects: Very common : Dizziness and somnolence. Common : Influenza , descresed appetite , depression , anxiety , insomnia , irritability , convulsion , vertigo , upper respiratory tract infections , cough , nausea , vomiting , constipation and fatigue . Uncommon : Suicidal ideation , psychotic disorder , aggression , agitation , neutropenia and type I hypersensitivity .

Known drug interactions: Alcohol : Brivaracetam approximately doubles the effect of alcohol on psychomotor function , attention and memory . Intake of Brivaracetam with alcohol is not recommended . Rifampin : Co-administration with rifampin decreases Brivaracetam plasma concentration likely because of CYP2C19 induction. Prescribers should increase the brivaracetam dose by upto 100% (i.e ., double the dosage) in patients while receiving concomitant treatment with rifampin.

Adults : Initial : 50mg daily or 100mg daily based on physician's assessment of need for seizures control in 2 equally divided doses , once in the morning and once in the evening . Maint dose : 100mg daily . May be adjusted in the range of 50mg to 200mg daily on the basis of patient's response . Children : =4yrs: Weight = 50kg : 50mg daily . May be given 100mg daily based on physician's assessment of need for seizure control in 2 equally divided doses , once in the morning and once in the evening. Maint dose : 100mg daily . May be adjusted in the range of 50mg to 200mg daily on the basis of patient's response . Weight <50kg : 1mg/kg daily . May be given 2mg/kg daily based on physician's assessment of need for seizure control in 2 equally divided doses , once in the morning and once in the evening . Maint dose : 2mg/kg daily on the basis of patient's response . <4yrs : Not recommended . OR As recommended by your physician .
