What it is used for: Cholesterol Control.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: Simvastatin may be used in these people, regardless of their cholesterol level, to • Help prolong life by reducing the risk of a heart attack • Reduce the risk of stroke • Reduce the need for surgery to increase blood flow to the heart • Reduce the need for hospitalisation due to angina.

How it works: Simvastatin belongs to a group of medicines called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. In terms of good and bad cholesterol, Simvastatin reduces the 'bad' cholesterol and raises the 'good' cholesterol.

Active ingredient: Simvastatin.

Reported side effects: Constipation, diarrhoea, wind • stomach upset or pain, feeling sick (nausea) • headache • dizziness • tingling in the hands or feet • signs of anaemia, such as tiredness, being short of breath, and looking pale • larger breasts than normal in men • bruising more easily than normal • skin rash, itchiness • fever, generally feeling unwell • pinkish, itchy swellings on the skin, also called hives or nettle rash • painful, swollen joints • feel tired or weak • loss of appetite • upper belly pain • dark urine • yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.

Known drug interactions: Nefazodone , indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir and saquinavir , boceprevir or telaprevir , gemfibrozil, ciclosporin , danazol , erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin and fusidic acid, ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, posaconazole and voriconazole, gemfibrozil , warfarin , verapamil, diltiazem or amlodipine, lomitapide , amiodarone, digoxin , elbasvir or grazoprevir .

Adults : Hyperlipidaemia : Initially 10mg at night adjusting at minimum 4 wk intervals according to response. Usual range 10-80mg daily daily a single dose at night. Children : Under 5yr , not recommended. Hyperlipidaemia including familial hypercholesterolaemia : 5-10 yr, initially 10mg at night increased , if necessary at intervals of atleast 4 wk to max 20mg at night ; 10-18yr , initially 10mg at night increased , if necessary , at intervals of at least 4 wk to max 40mg at night. Always consult to your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustments.
