What it is used for: Constipation.
Indications as listed by the manufacturer: Sodium picosulfate treats constipation by enhancing bowel movement, it is indicated in: • Acute and chronic constipation • Relief of evacuation in painful conditions such as hemorrhoids • Pre and post operatively • Preparation of barium enema • Preparation of colon for proctosigmoidoscopy .
How it works: Sodium picosulfate is chemically bisodic salt of 4-4'(2-Picoliliden) - bis (-Phenylsulphuric acid). It acts as a local laxative, metabolized by the colonic bacteria to the active compound bis (P-hydroxyphenyl) pyridyl-2-methane, which stimulate the mucosa of the large intestine & causing colonic peristalsis. Sodium picosulfate is usually effective within 10–14 hours .
Active ingredient: Sodium Picosulphate.
Reported side effects: Following side effects related to the gastrointestinal tract may rarely be seen with sodium picosulfate use: abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort or distension, borborygmus, nausea, vomiting and diarhoea .
Known drug interactions: Antibiotics , digoxin, diuretics , lithium , corticosteroids , oral contraceptives, antidiabetics, anticonvulsants, iron, bulking agent , TCADs, SSRIs, antipsychotics.

Adults: 1-2 tablets or 10-15 drops once a day , Children: 2-5 Years: 2-3 drops once daily ; 6-10 Years: 2-5 drops once daily . The dosage may be adjusted under medical advice, according to the age and symptoms. Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily while using any laxative OR As directed by the physician .
Active ingredient: Sodium Picosulphate.
- It is contraindicated in patients with ileum, intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal conditions like appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel disease and in severe dehydration. Known hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate .
- Children should not take without medical advice.
- Do not use this laxative for longer than 1 week unless approved by doctor.
- Laxative may be habit-forming and can harm bowels if used too long .
- Prolonged use should be avoided. Prolong use may lead to diarrhoea, excessive loss & imbalance of electrolytes with possible hypokalemia.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
