Artem Injection 80mg 6 Amp

What it is used for: Malaria.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is an anti-malarial drug. It is indicated for the treatment of all kinds of malarias , including the chloroquine-resistant malaria and the first aid of fatal malarias.

How it works: Artemether is active against all Plasmodia including those which may be resistant to other antimalarials. Artemether has very rapid schizontocidal activity. The schizontocidal activity of artemether is mainly due to destruction of the asexual erythrocytic forms of P.falciparum and P.vivax . There is inhibition of protein synthesis during growth of trophozoites. There is no cross resistance with chloroquine. It is not hypnozoiticidal but it reduces gamestocyte carriage. There is no rationale at present for using artemether for chemoprophylaxis.

Active ingredient: Artemether.

Reported side effects: Nausea , abdominal pain , diarrhoea , oral therapy only , dizziness , injection site pain , skin reactions and fever , hypotension , tinnitus , dark urine , sweating , somnolence and jaundice .

Known drug interactions: Antioxidant drugs e.g. vitamin E,C . Additive effect seen with chloroquine. Antagonistic effect seen with pyrimethamine and sulphonamides.

Adults : IM or IV Infusion : First dose 120mg , Followed by 60mg after 4-6hr; then 60mg after every 24 hr once daily. The total duration of treatment is 5 consecutive days. Total doses are 360-480mg for adults. Children : IM or IV Infusion : Age 7yr or more , same as adult dose . Below 7 yr age : 1.5mg/kg . Both the age group children should be given the sec dose after 4-6 hr; then one dose after every 24 hr once daily . The total duration of treatment is 5 consecutive days .

Active ingredient: Artemether. Labelled strength: 80mg.
