What it is used for: Ear Infection.
Indications as listed by the manufacturer: For the symptomatic relief and treatment of otitis externa .
How it works: It is a bactericidal preparation active against all the pathogens commonly found in bacterial infections of the ear. Polymixin B is bactericidal against a wide range of gram negative bacilli including Pseudomonas Spp., Escherichia coli, Enterobacter Spp., Klebsiella Spp., and Haemophilus influenzae. It exerts a bactericidal effect by binding to acid phospholipids in the cell wall and membranes of the bacterium, thereby rendering ineffective the osmotic barrier normally provided by the cell membrane. This leads to escape of the cell contents and the death of the organism.
Active ingredient: Polymyxin B Sulphate , Propylene Glycol , Lignocaine.
Reported side effects: It can cause stinging and burning of ear.

Adults : 3 drops 3 or 4 times daily into affected ear. Children : 1 or 2 drops 3 or 4 times daily into affected ear. OR As directed by your physician.

- It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
- Delayed ototoxicity has been reported in animals following administration of Polymyxin B to the middle ear .
- It is recommended that the dosage in patients with perforation of the eardrum should be restricted to a maximum of three applications daily for 10 days .
- Use with caution if you have other ear problem, in ear drum or ear infection .
- As with other antibiotic preparations , prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms , including fungi.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
