What it is used for: Anesthesia.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: For induction of general anaesthesia. For preoperative sedation (induction of sleepiness and relief of apprehension) and also to impair memory of preoperative events .

How it works: It is a short acting benzodiazepine, used as a premedicament and sedative in surgical procedures and for the induction of anaesthesia. Onset time of sedative effects after IM administration is 15 minutes with peak sedation occurring in 30-60 minutes

Active ingredient: Midazolam.

Reported side effects: Fluctuations in vital signs including decreased respiratory effects, variation in blood pressure and pulse rate are the most frequently seen findings. Laryngospasm, bronchospasm, dyspnoea, hyperventilation and airway obstruction. Premature ventricular contraction, vasovagal episode and tachycardia. Retrograde amnesia, euphoria, confusion, nervousness, restlessness, nightmares dysphonia and paresthesia. Blurred vision, diplopia, nystagamus, visual disturbances, blocked ears, loss of balance and light headedness. Headache, hiccough, nausea, vomiting, yawning, lethargy, weakness and faint feeling.

Known drug interactions: Antipsychotics , hypnotics , antidepressants , narcotic analgesics , anticonvulsants , anesthetics , antihistamines , alcohol, erythromycin , cimetidine , diltiazem , verapamil , ketoconazole , fluconazole , itraconazole , cyclosporin , nifedipine , nabilone , muscle relaxants , ulcer healing drugs , xanthines , macrolides , protease inhibitors.

Standard dosage : Midazolam is a potent sedative agent which requires slow administration and individualization of dosage. The dose should be individualized and titrated to the desired state of sedation according to the clinical need, physical status, age and concomitant medication. Preoperative/preprocedural sedation : Healthy adults <60yr : IM : 0.07-0.08mg-kg 30-60 minutes prior to surgery / procedure , usual dose 5mg . IV : 0.02-0.04mg/kg , repeat every 5 minutes as needed to desired effect or upto 0.1-0.2mg/kg . Conscious sedation : IV : Healthy adults <60 yr : Initial 1mg ; no more than 2.5mg over a period of 2 minutes . Total dose above 5mg is generally not needed . Maintenance 25% of dose used to reach sedative effect OR As directed by your physician .
