What it is used for: Bacterial Infection.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is used to treat some bacterial infections, such as : Urinary tract infections (uncomplicated urinary tract infections including cystitis and complicated urinary tract infections) - Sexually transmitted diseases (uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhea due to Neisseria gonorrhea) - Prostatitis (due to Escherichia coli) .

How it works: Norfloxacin is a quinolone carboxylic acid antibacterial agent for oral administration. Norfloxacin inhibits bacterial deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and is bactericidal. At the molecular level, three specific actions have been attributed to norfloxacin in the inhibition of E.coli cells: 1. inhibition of the ATP-dependent DNA supercoiling reaction catalyzed by DNA gyrase, 2. inhibition of the relaxation of supercoiled DNA, 3. promotion of double-stranded DNA breakage.

Active ingredient: Norfloxacin.

Reported side effects: Nausea • headache • dizziness. • Severe stomach pain • symptoms of severe sunburn, such as redness, itching, pain, swelling or blistering • pain, tenderness, swelling, or redness of muscles, joints or tendons • pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness in your arms or legs • bleeding or bruising more easily than normal, nose bleeds • signs of anaemia, such as tiredness, being short of breath and looking pale • numbness or tingling in fingers or toes • any signs of mental disturbance, such as confusion or hallucinations • worsening of myasthenia gravis symptoms • visual disturbances • changes in your hearing • decreased feeling or sensitivity, especially in the skin.

Known drug interactions: Nitrofurantoin , erythromycin , theophylline , cyclosporin , warfarin , glibenclamide , probenecid , amiodarone, procainamide and sotalol, cisapride , tricyclic antidepressants , non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , iron or zinc supplements, and multivitamins containing them , antacids , sucralfate , didanosine .

Urinary tract Infection : Adults : >18yr : Uncomplicated , 400mg every 12hr for 3 days (K.pneumoniae, E.coli or P.mirabilis) , or for 7-10 days ( other organisms ) . Complicated UTI , 400mg every 12hr for 10-21 days. Acute/Chronic Prostatitis : Adults : >18yr : 400mg every 12hr for 28 days. Children : Not recommended. OR As directed by your physician.
