What it is used for: Asthma.

How it works: Montelukast is from a group of medicines called leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs). LTRAs work by stopping the chemicals in your body that narrow your airways. These chemicals are called leukotrienes. Montelukast helps stop your airways from narrowing (caused by inflammation).
Active ingredient: Montelukast Sodium.
Reported side effects: Abdominal pain , Headache , Thirst , Rarely anaphylaxis , Angioedema , seizure , GI upset .
Known drug interactions: Phenobarbital , Phenytoin , Rifampicin , Other enzyme inducers , gemfibrozil.

5 mg tablet: The dosage for paediatric patients 6 month-6yr, 4mg once daily in evening. 6-15yr, 5mg once daily chewable tablet daily to be taken in the evening. 10 mg tablet: The dosage for adults and adolescents 15 years of age , 10 mg tablet daily to be taken in the evening. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustment.
Active ingredient: Montelukast Sodium. Labelled strength: 5mg.
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product.
- Montelukast should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids.
- Treatment with montelukast does not alter the need for patients with aspirin sensitive asthma to avoid taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Patient and physician should be alert for neuropsychiatric events. Patients should be instructed to notify their health care practitioner if any such changes occur.
- Patients should be advised never to use oral montelukast to treat acute asthma attacks and to keep their usual appropriate rescue medication for this purpose readily available. If an acute attack occurs, a short-acting inhaled ß-agonist should be used. Patients should seek their doctor's advice as soon as possible if they need more inhalations of short-acting ß-agonists than usual.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
