What it is used for: Hypertension.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is used: • Alone or with other blood pressure medicines to lower high blood pressure (hypertension). • To lower the chance of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and a heart problem called left ventricular hypertrophy. It may not help Black patients with this problem. • To slow the worsening of diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy) in patients with type 2 diabetes who have or had high blood pressure.

How it works: The mechanism of the antihypertensive action of amlodipine is due to direct relaxant effect on vascular smooth muscle. The precise mechanism by which amlodipine relieves angina has not been fully determined but amlodipine reduces total ischemic burden by the following two actions. Amlodipine dilates peripheral arterioles thus, reduces the total peripheral resistance (after load) against which the heart works. Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure. It is in the angiotensin receptor blocker family of medication, and is considered protective of the kidneys.

Known drug interactions: Hydrochlorothiazide, digoxin, warfarin, cimetidine and phenobarbital , Rifampin , Ketoconazole , Fluconazole , potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride), potassium supplements, or salt substitutes containing potassium may lead to increases in serum potassium , Lithium , NSAIDs , aliskiren
