What it is used for: Dementia.
Indications as listed by the manufacturer: Used for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.
How it works: Galantamine is in a class of medications called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. It works by increasing the amount of a certain natural substance in the brain that is needed for memory and thought. Galantamine may improve the ability to think and remember or slow the loss of these abilities in people who have AD.
Active ingredient: Galantamine HBr.
Reported side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, and decreased appetite.
Known drug interactions: Anticholinergic medicines , Cholinergic medicines (e.g. bethanecol , medicines for certain heart problems (such as digoxin, quinidine ) , certain medicines used to treat fungal infections (such as ketoconazole) or bacterial infections (such as erythromycin) , certain medicines used to treat depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder or anxiety (such as paroxetine, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine).

Adults : Initially 4mg twice daily or 8mg once daily in the morning . Then 8mg twice daily or 16mg once daily for atleast 4 weeks, increasing to maintenance 12mg twice daily or 24mg once daily depending on tolerance. Reduce dose to 8mg twice daily or 16mg once daily if not showing an increased response or not tolerating 12mg twice daily or 24mg once daily depending on benefit and tolerance. Reduce dose to 8mg twice daily or 16mg once daily if not showing an increased response or not tolerating 12mg twice daily or 24mg once daily. Assess response within 3 mnth and only continue if positive evidence of benefit and tolerance . Children : Not recommended. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustments.

- Known hypersensitivity to galantamine hydrobromide or any excipients.
- Serious skin reactions: discontinue at first appearance of skin rash.
- All patients should be considered at risk for adverse effects on cardiac conduction, including bradycardia and AV block, due to vagotonic effects on sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes.
- Active or occult gastrointestinal bleeding: monitor, especially those with an increased risk for developing ulcers.
- Monitor for respiratory adverse events in patients with a history of severe asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
