What it is used for: Epilepsy.
Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is used to: • Control epilepsy in adults and children on its own or with other medicines • Treat symptoms of mania associated with bipolar disorder in adults, such as aggressiveness, agitation, impulsive behaviour or excessively elevated mood.
How it works: It is thought to work by increasing the amount of an amino acid in the brain called gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA). By changing the amount of GABA in the brain, it is able to help control epilepsy and stabilize mood.
Active ingredient: Divalproex Sodium.
Reported side effects: Headache , Nausea or vomiting , Indigestion , Diarrhea , Tremors (involuntary shaking) , Feeling tired , Feeling weak or dizzy , Hair loss or hair growth on the face, chest or back , Increased appetite that may lead to weight gain , Hallucinations , Urinary incontinence , Aggravated convulsions , Depression , Kidney problems , Pancreatitis .
Known drug interactions: Phenobarbital , Lamotrigine , Carbamazepine, primidone, topiramate, felbamate, phenytoin, ethosuximide, rufinamide , Anticoagulants such as acetylsalicylic acid, warfarin, dicumarol ,diazepam, lorazepam, clonazepam , rifampin , Tolbutamide , zidovudine, ritonavir, lopinavir, lamivudine , doripenem, ertapenem, imipenem, meropenem , amitriptyline, nortriptyline.
Adults : ORAL : Complex partial seizures : Initial : 10-15mg/kg/day . Titrate : Increase by 5-10mg/kg/wk . Max : 60mg/kg/day . Absence seizures : Initial : 15mg/kg/day . Titrate : Increase by 5-10mg/kg/wk . Max : 60mg/kg/day . Children : All forms of epilepsy : Oral : Neonate , initially 20mg/kg once again daily ; usual maintenance dose 10mg/kg twice daily ; 1mnth-12yr , initially 10-15mg/kg (max 600mg) daily in 1-2 divided doses ( upto 60mg/kg daily in divided doses in infantile spasms , monitor clinical chemistry and haemotological parameters ) ; 12-18 yr , initially 600mg daily in 1-2 divided doses increased gradually ( in steps of 150-300mg) every 3 days ; usual maintenance dose 1-2 gm/day in 2 divided doses . max 2.5gm/day in 2 divided doses .
