What it is used for: Hypertension.
Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is (Valsartan + Hydrochlorothiazide) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension to lower blood pressure.
How it works: Valsartan : Valsartan blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Its action is therefore independent of the pathways for angiotensin II synthesis. Hydrochlorothiazide affects the renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption, directly increasing excretion of sodium and chloride in approximately equivalent amounts. Indirectly, the diuretic action of Hydrochlorothiazide reduces plasma volume, with consequent increases in plasma renin activity, increases in aldosterone secretion, increases in urinary potassium loss and decreases in serum potassium. The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of thiazides is unknown.
Active ingredient: Valsartan + Hydrochlorothiazide.
Reported side effects: Uncommon : Dehydration, parasthesia, vision blurred, tinnitus, hypotension, cough, myalgia and fatigue. Very Rare : Dizziness, diarrhea and arthralgia. Not known : Syncope, non cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, impaired renal function, serum uric acid increased, serum bilirubin and serum creatinine increased, hypokalemia, hyponatremia, elevation of blood urea nitrogen and neutropenia.
Known drug interactions: Lithium , rifampin, ciclosporin or efflux transporter (eg. Ritonavir) , Hydrochlorothiazide , antidepressants, antipsychotics, antiepileptics , Allopurinol , atropine, biperiden , noradrenaline , cholestyramine or colestipol , Probenacid & Sulfinpyrazone , kaliuretic diuretics, amphotericin, carbenoxolone, penicillin G, salicylic acid derivatives or antiarrhythmics , Cyclosporine , Potassium , Tetracyclines , Alcohol, anaesthetics and sedatives , Carbamazepine , Methyldopa.
The recommended dose of medicine (Valsartan + Hydrochlorothiazide) is one tablet once daily. Dose titration with the individual components is recommended. In each case, up-titration of individual components to the next dose should be followed in order to reduce the risk of hypotension and other adverse events. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustment.
Follow your doctor’s instructions. The dosage above is the usual range — your prescription takes precedence over it.

Fine quality, wrong choice on my part — I should have asked the pharmacist first about the strength.

Effective, but it took closer to two months than the four weeks I was hoping for.
