What it is used for: Hypertension.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is indicated in the management of mild to moderate hypertension in patients who are not adequately controlled on monotherapy.

How it works: Lisinopril : The mechanism through which lisinopril lowers blood pressure is believed to be primarily suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Lisinopril is antihypertensive even in patients with low-renin hypertension. Hydrochlorothiazide : The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of thiazides is unknown. Thiazides do not usually affect normal blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic and antihypertensive. Thiazides affect the renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption, directly increasing excretion of sodium and chloride in approximately equivalent amounts. Indirectly, the diuretic action of hydrochlorothiazide reduces plasma volume with consequent increase in plasma renin activity increase in aldosterone secretion, increases in urinary potassium loss and decrease in serum potassium. The renin-aldosterone link is mediated by angiotensin II, so co-administration of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist tends to reverse the potassium loss associated with these diuretics .

Active ingredient: Lisinopril , Hydrochlorothiazide.

Reported side effects: Common : Dizziness, headache, dry cough, fatigue, hypotension including orthostatic hypotension. Small decreases in hemoglobin and haematocrit. Less Common : Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, rash, gout, palpitations, chest discomfort, muscle cramps and weakness, paraesthesia, asthenia and impotence, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia and hyper or hypokalemia. Rarely : Pancreatitis, agranulocytosis, elevations of liver enzymes and/or serum bilirubin.
