What it is used for: Haemorrhage.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: Tranexamic acid is indicated for the treatment of: - Hemorrhage or risk of hemorrhage in increased fibrinolysis or fibrinogenolysis .

How it works: Tranexamic acid competitively inhibits activation of plasminogen(via binding to the kringle domain), thereby reducing conversion of plasminogen to plasmin (fibrinolysin), an enzyme that degrades fibrin clots, fibrinogen, and other plasma proteins, including the procoagulant factors V and VIII. Tranexamic acid also directly inhibits plasmin activity, but higher doses are required than are needed to reduce plasmin formation.

Active ingredient: Tranexamic acid.

Reported side effects: Hypotension has occurred, particularly after rapid intravenous dosage. Thrombotic complications have been reported in patients receiving tranexamic acid, but these are usually a consequence of its inappropriate use. There have been a few instances of transient disturbance of color vision associated with use of tranexamic acid. Hypersensitivity skin reactions have also been reported.

Known drug interactions: Estrogens , Thrombolytic drugs.

Inj : Inhibition of fibrinolysis , hereditary angioedema : INJ : By IV injection over at least 10 minutes , 1-18yr , 10mg/kg (max 1 gm) 2-3 times daily . By continuous IV infusion , 1-18 yr , 45mg/kg over 24 hr . Prevention of excessive bleeding after dental procedures ( e.g in haemophilia ) : inj : By IV injection pre-operatively , 6-18yr , 15-25mg/kg ( max 1.5gm) , Local fibrinolysis : 15-25mg/kg body weight two-three times daily . OR As directed by your physician .
