What it is used for: Hypertension.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure (also known as ‘hypertension’).

How it works: Olmesartan blocks the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle. Its action is, therefore, independent of the pathways for angiotensin II synthesis.

Active ingredient: Olmesartan Medoxomil.

Reported side effects: Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): • Feeling dizzy, headache • Feeling sick, indigestion, diarrhoea, stomach ache, gastroenteritis • Feeling tired • Sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, bronchitis, flu-like symptoms, cough • Pain, particularly in the back, bones or joints • Infection of the urinary tract • Blood in the urine .

Known drug interactions: Potassium supplements, a salt substitute which contains potassium, water tablets (diuretics) or heparin , Lithium , Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory (NSAIDs) , ibuprofen, aceclofenac , Colesevelam hydrochloride , Certain antacids .

Adults : Start with 20mg once daily, may be increased to a max 40mg per day or hydrochlorothiazide therapy may be added, if necessary. Effect may be seen within 2 week and max by 8 week after initiating therapy. Children : Not recommended. OR As directed by your physician.
