Amkay 250mg2ml Injection

What it is used for: Bacterial Infection.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is used in the treatment of serious infections caused by bacteria sensitive to amikacin.

How it works: The primary mechanism of action of amikacin is the same as that for all aminoglycosides. It binds to bacterial 30S ribosomal subunits and interferes with mRNA binding and tRNA acceptor sites, interfering with bacterial growth.

Active ingredient: Amikacin.

Reported side effects: Ringing in your ears or loss of hearing • decrease in the amount of urine you produce • severe allergic reaction - you may experience a sudden itchy rash (hives), swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth or throat (which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing), and you may feel you are going to faint • skin rash • nausea and vomiting • an excessive build up of bacteria or yeast which are resistant to amikacin re side-effects may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people are listed below: • dizziness or vertigo (spinning sensation) • headache • fever • unusually low amount of red blood cells in the blood (anaemia) or excessiveamounts of the white blood cells known as eosinophils in the blood (eosinophilia) • low levels of magnesium in the blood .

Known drug interactions: Diuretics (water tablets) such as furosemide and ethacrynic acid • Other antibiotics that can affect your kidneys, hearing or balance • Anaesthetics or muscle-relaxing drugs • Indomethacin (an anti-inflammatory medicine) • Other antibiotics called beta-lactamases such as penicillin’s or cephalosporins • Bisphosphonates; drugs used to treat loss of bone mass • vitamin B1 (thiamine) • Platinum compounds used in chemotherapy such as cisplatin.

Adults : 15mg/kg IM or IV daily in two divided doses for upto 10 days; total max 15gm. Children : Neonates, initially 10mg/kg then 15mg/kg daily intwo divided doses; others same as adult. Lower respiratory Infections : IV : Adults , Children & Other infants : 7.5mg/kg every 12hr or 5mg/kg IM/IV every 8hr. Max : 1.5gm/day. Neonates : Loading dose : 10mg/kg. Maintenance : 7.5mg/kg every 12hr. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustments.
