Aminophylline Injection

What it is used for: Asthma.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is used to treat : Treatment and prophylaxis of bronchospasm associated with asthma. emphysema & chronic bronchitis ; Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction .

How it works: It contains aminophylline that is the salt of theophylline most commonly used for therapeutic purposes. It acts as a bronchodilator (dilates the bronchi i.e. air passage). It improves breathing by opening air passages in the lungs.

Active ingredient: Aminophylline.

Reported side effects: Feeling sick. • Headache. • Dizziness. • Vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, heartburn or gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. upset stomach). • Difficulty in sleeping, feeling restless, irritable and shaky. • A fast, slow or irregular heart beat. • Difficulty in passing urine (especially in men) or passing increased amounts of urine. • Increased uric acid levels in the blood, which could cause painful, swollen joints. • Seizures, fits or convulsions. • Rash or itchy skin.

Known drug interactions: Aminoglutethimide, methotrexate or lomustine , carbamazepine or phenytoin , barbiturates , adenosine, diltiazem, isoprenaline, mexiletine, propafenone, propranolol or verapamil , regadenoson or dipyridamol , pentoxifylline , benzodiazepines , aciclovir , sulphinpyrazone or allopurinol , carbimazole , cimetidine or nizatidine , ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, enoxacin ,fluconazole , rifampicin or isoniazid , ritonavir , thiabendazole , fluvoxamine or lithium , disulfiram , ephedrine

Severe acute asthma or acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in patients not previously treated with theophylline : Adults : By slow IV injection over atleast 20min ( with close monitoring ), 250-500mg (5mg/kg), then adjusted according to requirement and plasma-theophylline concentration. Children : Under 12yr, 5mg/kg, then adjusted according to requirement and plasma-theophylline concentration. Severe acute asthma or acute excerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : By IV infusion (with close monitoring). Adults : 500-700mcg/kg/hr, adjusted according to plasma-theophylline concentration. Elderly : 300mcg/kg/hr . Children : Under 12yr, 1mg/kg/hr, adjusted according to plasma-theophylline concentration.
