What it is used for: Asthma.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: Asthma (Reversible Obstructive Airways Disease) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) .

How it works: Salmeterol: Salmeterol is a selective long-acting (12 hour) ß2 adrenoceptor agonist with a long side chain which binds to the exo-site of the receptor. The pharmacologic effects of ß2 adrenoceptor agonist drugs, including salmeterol, are at least in part attributable to stimulation of intracellular adenyl cyclase, the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic-3’,5’-adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP). Increased cyclic AMP levels cause relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and inhibition of release of mediators of immediate hypersensitivity from cells, especially from mast cells. Fluticasone propionate: Fluticasone propionate given by inhalation atrecommendeddoses has a glucocorticoid anti-inflammatory action within the lungs, resulting in reduced symptoms and exacerbations of asthma, with less adverse effects than when corticosteroids are administered systemically .

Active ingredient: Salmeterol + Fluticasone Propionate.

Reported side effects: Very common: Headache and nasopharyngitis. Common: Candidiasis of the mouth and throat, pneumonia, bronchitis, hypokalemia, throat irritation, hoarseness/dysphonia, sinusitis, contusions, muscle cramps, traumatic fractures, arthralgia and myalgia. Uncommon: Cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, respiratory symptoms (dyspnoea), hyperglycemia, anxiety, sleep disorders, tremor, cataract, palpitations, tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and angina pectoris. Rare: Oesophageal candidiasis, angioedema (mainly facial and oropharyngeal oedema), respiratory symptoms (bronchospasm), anaphylactic reactions including anaphylactic shock, cushing's syndrome, cushingoid features, adrenal suppression, growth retardation in children and adolescents, decreased bone mineraldensity, behavioural changes, including psychomotor hyperactivity and irritability (predominantly in children), glaucoma, cardiac arrhythmias (including supraventricular tachycardia and extrasystoles) and paradoxical bronchospasm.

Known drug interactions: Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, non-potassium sparring diuretics,ß Adrenergic Receptor Blocking Agents .

Adults and adolescents 12 years and older: Two inhalations of 25mcg salmeterol and 125mcg Fluticasone propionate twice daily. or - Two inhalations of 25mcg salmeterol and 250mcg Fluticasone propionate twicedaily. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): For adult patients the recommended dose is two inhalation 25mcg + 125mcg to 25mcg + 250mcg Saltra (Salmeterol + Fluticasone propionate) twice daily .

Active ingredient: Salmeterol + Fluticasone Propionate. Labelled strength: 125mcg.
