How it works: Thyroxine is a hormone which is produced naturally in the body by the thyroid gland. Levothyroxine is a synthetic version of this hormone. Thyroxine controls how much energy your body uses. When the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroxine (a condition known as hypothyroidism), many of the body’s functions slow down. Some of the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are: • Tiredness • Weight gain • Feeling depressed . Levothyroxine used to replace the thyroxine that your thyroid gland cannot produce and prevent the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Before starting your treatment your doctor will carry out a blood test to work out how much levothyroxine you need.

Active ingredient: Levothyroxine Sodium.

Reported side effects: Anginal pain , cardiac arrhytmias , palpitation , skeletal muscles cramps , tachycardia , diarrhoea , vomiting , tremor , excitability , insomnia , headaches , flushing , weight loss , muscular weakness , sweating , rash , pruritis , oedema , restlessness , menstrual disorders , pseudotumour cerebri , heat intolerance . Transpient alopecia in children.

Known drug interactions: Anticoagulants , cholestyramine , phenytoin , digitalis , insulin , antidiabetic therapy , amiodarone , rifampicin , anticonvulsants , sertraline , lithium , sucralfate , polystyrene , sulfonate , sevelamer , cimetidine , antacids , oral iron , digoxin , NSAIDS , B Blockers , tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

Adults : Initially 50-100mcg increasing by 50mcg at 3-4 week intervals until normal metabolism is steadily maintained. Eldrely : >50 Do not exceed 50mcg/ day initially. Congenital hypothyroidism and juvenile myxoedema : Initially 25 mcg daily increasing by 25 mcg every 2-4 wk ; reduce slightly once mild toxic symptoms appear . Children : Hypothyroidism : Neonate , initially 10-15mcg/kg once daily , max 50mcg/day , adjusted in steps of 5mcg/kg every 2 wk or as necessary ; usual maintenance dose 20-50mcg daily ; 1 mnth-2yr , initially 5mcg/kg once daily , max 50mcg/day adjusted in steps of 10-25mcg/day every 2-4 wk until metabolism normalised ; usual maintenance dose 25-75mcg/day . Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustments.
