What it is used for: Glaucoma.

Indications as listed by the manufacturer: It is an alpha-adrenergic receptor agonist indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

How it works: It is comprised of two components: brimonidine tartrate and timolol. Each of these two components decreases elevated intraocular pressure, whether or not associated with glaucoma. Elevated intraocular pressure is a major risk factor in the pathogenesis of optic nerve damage and glaucomatous visual field loss. The higher the level of intraocular pressure, the greater the likelihood of glaucomatous field loss and optic nerve damage. Brimonidine tartrate has a dual mechanism of action by reducing aqueous humor production and increasing uveoscleral outflow. Timolol maleate is a beta1 and beta2 adrenergic receptor inhibitor that does not have significant intrinsic sympathomimetic, direct myocardial depressant, or local anesthetic (membrane-stabilizing) activity.

Active ingredient: Brimonidine Tartrate , Timolol.

Reported side effects: Foreign body sensation, eye pain, photophobia, conjunctival hemorrhage, dry eye, eye irritation, intraocular pressure increased, corneal endothelial cell loss, vision blurred, iritis, and headache.

Known drug interactions: Catecholamine-depleting drugs (eg, reserpine) , antihypertensives and/or cardiac glycosides , alcohol, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives, or anesthetics , CYP2D6 inhibitors (eg, quinidine, SSRIs) , Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors
